There 160 days until the 2018 Rose Parade. Rose Parade fun fact of the week: The Tournament of Roses Foundation is a nonprofit group founded in 1983 to receive contributions from its members, supporters, and the public. They make annual grants to local nonprofit organizations in the Pasadena area. To date they have given over $2 million to more than 130 organizations!

Days of ’47 Parade

Thank you to everyone who helped with the Days of ’47 parade and congratulations to the students on completing the parade. If you missed seeing them, there is video on Facebook of the parade coverage.

Rehearsal Schedule

Be sure to check the calendar so that you are aware of upcoming rehearsals. Remember that from here on out, all students are expected to be at all rehearsals unless an absence excuse form has been completed, turned in, and approved. No approved absences will be granted for camps.

Rehearsals and camps are only successful if every student is there to learn what is being taught. As with any team, every member is affected when someone is missing.

Band Camp

Band camp is next week from Monday, July 31, through Friday, August 4, and runs from 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM each day. Students should come with their water jugs full, sunscreen on (with more to reapply during the day) and having eaten a good breakfast. Our amazing parent volunteers will feed them both lunch and dinner, as well as a morning snack and and afternoon snack, and they will have lots of water breaks throughout the day.

The days are long–there is much to learn–but your students are well taken care of. They will come home exhausted. The best thing you can do to support them during band camp week is to have them get a shower and go to bed early each night when they return home.

For those who are interested, there is traditionally an opportunity to come and see what they have learned at the end of the day on Friday. Arrive about 30 minutes before the end of rehearsal on Friday to see what they have learned during the week.

Thank you to everyone who signed up to help with band camp. The sign-up sheet has been completely filled! If you were not able to donate and still want to, there are still a few random items that we need. Email, call, or text Becky Barney (914-439-7534 or beckybarney6@gmail.com) for more information.

Booster Meeting

Our next scheduled band booster meeting is on Wednesday, August 9, at 7:30 PM in the band room. Booster meetings are normally held on the first Wednesday of the month, but the August meeting has been moved because of band camp week.

All parents are invited to attend Booster Meetings. If you want to know more about how the booster organization is run, find out how you can get involved, or help in the decision-making process, come to the booster meeting. We hope to see you there!

Rose Parade “Making a Difference” Service Competition

In the spirit of the Rose Parade theme, we are going to hold a “service competition” between the different sections in the band. We have several exciting service events we will be doing throughout the marching band season. We hope everyone has fun with this and will live up to the Westlake Marching Thunder name by showing respect and kindness during the several service events. Let’s make Utah proud as we represent the Rose Parade theme of “Making a Difference.”

The first event will be providing speaking partners for students of “English Without Limits” in Eagle Mountain each Thursday evening in July. There are only four slots each day. To sign up to help with this, go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e044aa8a628aa8-english.

The second event will be joining Joshua Fluckiger on the morning of August 5th as he completes an Eagle Scout project for “Sleep in Heavenly Peace.” Sleep in Heavenly Peace provides bunk beds, which we will build, and bedding for children without beds. To sign up to help with this event, go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e044aa8a628aa8-sleep.

Thanks ahead of time for supporting this fun competition. We know that you will “make a difference” in your own community and in the world community. Please call Karen Rowley (385-539-0481) with any questions.
