There are 132 days until the 2018 Rose Parade. Rose Parade fun fact of the week: Rose Parade floats can get very complicated. Past floats have included small working roller coasters, a car that transformed into a spaceship, and a working water slide.
Registration and Fee Deadlines
Westlake athletic policy requires that all physicals, fees, and records in RegisterMyAthelete must have been completed by August 18. Your student’s RegisterMyAthelete account must have been marked “completed” by this date. If you have questions about whether your student’s registration is complete, log into RegisterMyAthlete and verify that all items have been marked as “completed.”
Band fees are now past due. If you have not paid your fees, please get your fees paid as soon as possible. This can be done online at MySchoolFees.com or in the Westlake finance office.
Students should also have submitted a printed copy of their 2016-17 fourth quarter report card in order to determine eligibility for participation in extracurricular activities. These should be put in the manila envelope marked “Report Cards” in the slot on Mr. Mangelson’s door.
If these items have not been completed, your student may not be allowed to rehearse or practice with the band.
School-to-School Form for Ninth Grade Students
The “school to school” form must be submitted for all ninth grade students who are participating in marching band. Please follow the instructions on the attached form to gather all required signatures and then submit the form to the Westlake counseling office as soon as possible. Prop Breakdown
This Saturday, August 26, we will be working to finish breaking down the props from last year to make room for our new props. We will begin at 9:00 AM at the compound on the south side of the school near the band room. This is a great opportunity for parents looking for a way to get involved.
If you can bring your own tools, any of the following will be helpful: drill with a Phillips bit, hammer, crescent wrench, or a sawzall. If you don’t have tools to bring, there are still ways you can help with the demolition. Many hands make this into light work.
Music and Drill Pass-Offs
Students should now be ready to pass off all three movements of their music as well as their dots for drill. Please check with your student to see if they have passed off their music and drill. Our success as a band depends on each individual member learning their parts in a timely manner. Thank you.
Gas Can Donations
Thank you to those who have signed up to donate gas cans. The sign-up has been filled. If you signed up to donate a gas can, you can send that with your student to rehearsal.
September 9 ACT Testing Date
As we discussed at step-off meeting, marching band students are not able to take the ACT test on September 9 due to cleaning camp. Because this is a camp that has been on the schedule from the beginning, students will not be excused to take the test. Students who wish to take the ACT will be able to take the October test because call time for the competition that day will not be until later in the afternoon. Please do not schedule to take the September ACT. Exceptions and excused absences are not allowed for this date.
