There are 119 days until the 2018 Rose Parade. Rose Parade fun fact of the week: The Tournament of Roses Parade used to be called The Battle of the Flowers. It changed early on when the founder of the event decided he liked the ring of “tournament” better than “battle.”
Homecoming Week Schedule
Homecoming is this weekend with our first home football game on Friday! There are several schedule items to be aware of this week due to homecoming activities.
Wednesday’s rehearsal is an afternoon rehearsal instead of an evening rehearsal due to the homecoming parade and powder puff game. Rehearsal begins at 3:00 PM and will run until 5:15 PM. The homecoming parade begins at 6:00 PM. Students should be wearing their polo shirts and shorts of their choice. They can wear comfortable tennis shoes; they do not need to wear marching shoes.
Thursday’s rehearsal is a normal afternoon rehearsal.
Friday begins with a pregame rehearsal from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Students should be wearing polo shirts and blue jeans with no holes along with black marching shoes and black socks. We will break from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM to give students a chance to eat dinner. We recommend they bring a sack dinner to eat at the school. We will perform the pregame show before the football game begins at 7:00 PM.
When the band plays at a home football game, students play the pregame show and are then expected to sit with the band to play pep band music for the full length of the game. Students can be picked up at the band room after the game ends and equipment has been put away.
We will play for halftime for the homecoming game, where we will do a mixed program with other Westlake performing groups. We will not be doing the field show at halftime as we have in past years because the game we were scheduled to perform at is over fall break and we will be missing too many students.
Saturday is cleaning camp from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Students should have their water bottles, sunscreen, and a sack lunch. Students will not be allowed to leave early for homecoming prep and no excused absences are given for cleaning camp.
Competition Food Sign-Up
Competition season is almost here and we are so excited, but we really need your help!
The following sign-up is for both the Weber and Nebo competitions. Please pay close attention to the details of each item before signing up.
If you sign up to help serve dinner, we will be serving AT the competitions. We need a lot of help to make sure they all get through the line quickly and efficiently so they have plenty of time to do all they need to do before they perform.

Rehearsal Car Pools
We have received a request to facilitate car pool opportunities for students coming from Frontier for 3:00 PM practices. The band and boosters are not allowed to arrange for car pools due to district liability and transportation policies, but we do have a parent who is inviting any who are interested in working independently to work out car pools to contact her directly. If you are interested, contact Deanne Hill at deannekaye@hotmail.com or 801-789-7998.
Booster Meeting This Thursday
The band booster meeting is this Thursday, September 7, at 7:30 PM. We are heading in to competition season, so come see how you can help. All parents are invited to attend booster meetings. We hope to see you there.
Parking Reminder
In accordance with Westlake policy and for the safety of your students, please do not park along the curb or driveway areas in front of the band room or the football field. Blocking these lanes creates an unsafe situation where students cross the driving lane with low visibility.
A quick pickup is fine if your student is on the curb ready to hop in the vehicle, but if you are waiting for your child to finish practice and come to the car, please move to the parking lot to wait. If your child is not in sight and heading to the car, please proceed to the nearest parking stall. There are parking stalls available both by the band room and the football field.
In addition to the policy and safety issues, we are heading into the portion of the season where students are moving heavy equipment and props to and from the field each day. This also poses a risk of vehicle damage if equipment comes into contact with a vehicle. The best way to keep our students, equipment, and your vehicle safe is to use the parking lot rather than the driveway.
