There 245 days until the 2018 Rose Parade. Rose Parade fun fact of the week: It takes 600 tons of steel to make the floats for Rose Parade each year. That is enough steel to make almost 700 cars.

Uniform Fittings

Uniform fittings will be done this Tuesday, May 2, beginning at 6:00 PM (before the marching band step-off meeting). After the step-off meeting, we will finish up any fittings that couldn’t be completed before the meeting. We are submitting our order for new uniforms (more about that in a minute…) this week and must get measurements for all students so that we can submit them with the order.

ALL INSTRUMENTAL STUDENTS MUST BE FITTED FOR UNIFORMS. PLEASE HAVE INSTRUMENTAL STUDENTS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL ON TUESDAY BY 6:00 PM.

To ensure that we can measure correctly, students should be wearing thin, lightweight clothing, similar to what they would wear under their uniform during a marching band performance. Don’t wear sweaters or sweatshirts unless you have a T-shirt underneath. This will allow us to get accurate measurements.

We need six parents to help with uniform fittings on Tuesday night. There are multiple measurements that need to be taken for every student, along with measurements for gloves, shoes, and polo shirts. If you are able to help with uniform fittings this Tuesday beginning at 6:00 pm and again after the step-off meeting concludes, please click the link below to sign up to help.

We are ordering our new uniforms this week! Using the equipment rotation money we will receive from the school district this summer and the money we have raised from fundraisers, we are able to make the down payment for our uniforms. We are excited to have new uniforms for this year’s marching band season and our upcoming performance in the Rose Parade.

Marching Band Step-Off Meeting

Marching band step-off meeting is this Tuesday, May 2, at 7:00 PM in the Westlake auditorium. Step-off meeting is a mandatory meeting for all students and parents involved in marching band for the coming year. We will be reviewing information about the 2017 marching season, including important information about the Rose Parade tour and the upcoming visit from the Rose Parade committee president.

Parent Show Shirts

Thank you to everyone who submitted their show shirt orders. We have decided to keep the show shirt order open until after Tuesday’s step-off meeting so that we can be sure everyone has had the opportunity to order. If you thought you missed it, you still have time!

Show shirt orders must be submitted by midnight on Tuesday, May 2. Remember that students do not need to order a shirt. This order form is for parents and family members who would like a show shirt.

Shirts are $18 (tax included) and can be paid for on www.myschoolfees.com or in the finance office. Order shirts at https://goo.gl/forms/Xd88zWeCrShYnvO63.

Rose Parade Visit

On May 19 and 20, Lance Tibbetts, president of the Rose Parade, will be in town to visit the band and to help us raise awareness and money for our trip.

On Friday, May 19, we will be having a “Cool School of the Week” presentation with Fox 13. Please watch for information that will be coming, we will need the students to participate in this! On the morning of Saturday, May 20, we will be participating in service projects to go along with the parade theme of Making a Difference and there will be a fundraising dinner that night.

Details on the schedule for this visit will be provided at the step-off meeting on Tuesday, May 2.

Section Parents Needed

We need of section parents for several sections. If you are interested in becoming a section parent or would like information on what is involved, please contact Charlotte Ducos to get more information.

We have a couple of immediate assignments for our section parents, so we would like to fill these positions as soon as possible. If you are interested, please email cdducos@gmail.com with your name, your student’s name, and what section they are in (what instrument they play). She will contact you with more information and let you know if we need help with your child’s section.

Color Guard Tour Registration

Congratulations to all of our newly-auditioned color guard members. If you are new to color guard, please be sure to get registered in RegisterMyAthlete and register with Bob Rogers Travel for the tour as soon as possible! If you have not already completed your tour registration, please take care of this today.

Clothing Drive

We are still accepting clothing donations. We are on the list to receive a second trailer for the clothing that is still in our band trailer. Until we have a scheduled date for that trailer, we are still taking clothing donations. We would love to fill this second trailer as full as we can, so if you have additional clothing items to donate, we will take them!

Contact Charlotte Ducos (cdducos@gmail.com) to schedule a time to drop off any additional clothing donations. We will announce a final drop-off date when we know the scheduled date for the second trailer.

Volunteers Needed

We have two volunteer positions to be filled. Actually, we have a lot more than that…. We have two volunteer position to be filled today!

First, we need a social media guru to help drive our efforts to get out word of our fundraisers and events for the band. If you have great social media experience and would like to help the band in this area, we have a spot for you.

Second, we need a videographer. We have been asked by the Rose Parade committee to participate in a contest that involves making a video. We are looking for someone who has experience with and enjoys creating videos. This person will use footage of band events and activities to create a video based on the theme we have been given.

If you are interested in either of these positions, please contact Charlotte Ducos at cdducos@gmail.com.

Metal Water Bottles

Mountain Rider Swag will be at the step-off meeting to take orders for engraved metal water bottles. The are metal water bottles that are laser engraved with Westlake Marching Thunder and the student’s name or nickname on the opposite side. The bottles have either a straw or spout top. These are an optional item and are $18 if paid in cash or $19 if paid with a credit card.

School-to-School Forms

Thank you to those who have printed and started filling out school-to-school forms for their ninth grade students. Please do not submit these forms until after August 1, 2017. The staff at Westlake is not prepared to accept and processing these forms until then.
